Home Security: Summer Tips

home-security

As the weather gets warmer burglars get busier! Burglars are opportunist so they take advantage of people sitting out in the back garden, open doors and windows and people jetting off on holiday leaving their properties empty.  This is why our team at Re-Entry-Locksmiths have put together this helpful guide on how to improve your home security ready for this summer.

Summer Security Tips

Keep Windows and Doors Locked – Even if your only sat in your back garden it is important to make sure that the windows and doors to your property are kept locked as burglars will jump at the opportunity to sneak through an open window or door.

Do not Leave Spare Keys Outside – There is no such thing as a safe place for a spare key outside your property these days, burglars are very clued up on all the places they should look, and it would not take them long to find it and easily let themselves into your property.

Hide Valuables – Keep all valuable well out of view from windows, and if you are going to be leaving your property vacant then ensure you put them away in a safe and secure place, so if a burglar does manage to break-in to your property whist you are away, they will have a hard time finding anything of value to take.

Keep It off Social Media – If you are planning a vacation then it is best not to announce it all over social media until you return home, it is easier than you think for this sort of information to fall into the wrong hands!

Hold Post – Contact the Royal Mail when you are planning to leave your home vacant so that you can have all of your mail put on hold. There is no bigger giveaway to an empty property than a pile of unopened post building up.

Get Neighbours To Check In – Give a spare key to a trusted neighbour or friend and ask them to check in on the house ever now and then, just opening and shutting curtains and turning lights on and off can create the impression that your home isn’t empty.

Leave Cars Outside Your Home – When you go on holiday it is a good idea to use public transport to get to the airport or your destination as leave a vehicle parked outside your property can create the impression that someone is home.

Mow Grass – Before you leave on holiday make sure that the grass is cut, and bushes and shrubs have been trimmed as many burglars see an overgrown lawn and assume that the property must be empty.

Invest In Home Security Measures – Ensure all of your locks are in good working order and either meet or exceed the current British Standard BS3621. And damaged, faulty, unsecured, or substandard locks will need upgrading as soon as possible and extra security measures such as alarms, CCTV and security lighting should be considered.
