Tips for Keeping Burglars Out

Homes without security measures in place are more likely to be broken into than homes with simple security measures. Installing good window locks and strong deadlocks can make a huge difference. Take a look at the security measures listed below and see if you can make some improvements to your home security.

Here are a few tips:

  • Always fit good-quality locks on doors and windows – a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window;
  • If you leave your home, even for a short time, make sure you close and secure all doors and windows, even those on upper levels;
  • Remove all keys from locked doors and windows keeping them out of sight;
  • Consider installing a cover plate over the inside of a letterbox to minimise the risk of implements being used to steal keys kept close to the door;
  • Remember – if you can gain access to your house without keys, so can a burglar;
  • Install a burglar alarm and making sure it is visible;
  • Don’t forget to cancel any deliveries such as milk and papers if your going on holiday;
  • If you’re not going to be around for several days, ask a friend or neighbour to empty your post box and put your bins out, giving the illusion that someone is home.
